While this mixer features a roomy 5 quart mixing bowl, it will accommodate the smaller 3 quart and 4.5 quart bowls as well. The bowl is stainless steel with an ergonomic handle and design. For KitchenAid’s 90th Anniversary, they have introduced a glass bowl as well.
One of the unique things about KitchenAid’s mixer design is the beater action. Many mixers utilize a rotating bowl to mix the ingredients within. This Artisan stand mixer utilizes what is called a “planetary mixing action” to mix the ingredients. According to the manufacturer, “the beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise; moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl.” This eliminates the need for a spinning bowl.
Three accessories come with the mixer: the wire whip, flat beater, and dough hook.
Wire Whip: is used to whip air into your fluffier mixtures such as whipped cream and angel food cake
Flat Beater: is used in your usual batters like cake and cookies
Dough Hook: is used to mix and knead doughs
